| News: Strikers vs Campbelltown Post Match Review. |
Courtesy of COLOSSUS posted on www.footballnews.com.au
With a very strong South Westerly seabreeze blowing straight through Carnegie Reserve, it was evident from the start that Football wasnt going to be at its most attractive today, and how true that came to be.
Newly promoted Western Strikers kicked their 1st ever Super League Football today and sent a clear message to the rest of the League that they arent here to just stay, they are here to play finals football. Charlie Villanis team beat Campbelltown 3-2 in a game that the scoreboard rather flattered the travelling side, but Red Devils coach Rocky Aloisi would be livid with his teams display this afternoon.
As expected, it was the Red Devils who came out of the blocks in 2nd gear, but they found it hard to get the ball into the Strikers box. Against the run of play on around 10-15 minutes (i didnt have my watch so guessing), Western Strikers took the lead after a ball was cleared as far as the 18 yard box where a Strikers player took a volley which went into the top left corner of Les Pogliacomis goal, 1 nil Strikers.
From there on, Villanis men settled and gained confidence each and every minute and with Brazilian playmaker Felipe Garcia starting to make the middle of the park his own, it was the highly fancied and experienced Campbelltown that made all the school boy errors with simple 3 yard passes struggling to reach their targets. Midway through the 1st half, Campbelltown spearhead Jason Trimboli even dropped himself into the middle of the park to get a touch, such was his frustration with his team mates. Catanzaro was nowhere to be found, Fleetwood was worn like a glove and couldnt break the tag, Zilic worked hard but lost the ball more times than not, which left 18 year old Stephen Piotto to do all of Campbelltowns distribution which he did like a veteran. Western Strikers defence lead by stalwart Christ McNichols was so solid, Campbelltown were forced to take long range shots and it was quiet obvious that the Campbelltown players werent wearing their shooting boots. With the Strikers domination in the middle growing as the half went on, Right back Vas Pahars didnt get to see Western Strikers defensive side of the park, 1 nil strikers @ Half Time.
Enter the 2nd period, and the game started exactly as the 1st did, with Campbelltown again looking the most likely to do something. But again, it was Strikers against the run of play who got their 2nd of the game within 10 minutes of the restart after a headed mistake by veteran defender Michael Menechella allowed Strikers forward Boulabek to score from inside the box which Pogliacomi could of done a little better with, nevertheless 2 nil Strikers, and the Red Devils were now in all sorts of trouble. Campbelltown coach Aloisi had seen enough, and made his 1st change of the game straight after that goal when he brought on Toure for the hard working Paleka who was probably made a scapegoat because of his midfielders and defenders less than average performances. The change made the unfortunate Paleka look even worse when his replacement scored with his 1st touch of the game when he put the ball passed Strikers keeper Picca from 10 yards after some good build up work. With Campbelltown back in the game, the Strikers midfield again asserted itself and from here on end, the Red Devils just couldnt contain the brilliant Brazilian Garcia, who made Cambelltown midfielders and defenders alike, look like 15 year olds with such ease he danced the samba around them. Felipe Garcia was everywhere, and Campbelltown were chasing him everywhere, this mans skill was sublime, his vision deft, and his touch world class, where was Aurelio Vidmar???
Then with 10 minutes remaining, what seemed like the easiest of clearances for Michael Menechella turned out to be the icing on the cake when Michael gifted the ball to guess who?, Felip Garcia on the edge of the 18 yard box, who threw Michael a dummy that sent him rolling to the other side of the park and he expertly and beautifully put the ball past Pogliacomi from 15 yards. 3-1, and this game was over bar the shouting, and the vocal and well numbered Strikers supporters sang their victory chant while the Red Devils were left pondering exactly what was happening. Fair to say that Menechella couldnt complain when he was subbed straight after that 3rd goal.
Within 5 minutes, Catanzaro scored a beautiful header, but it was controversial since the whole ground except the referee saw a clear push on one of the Strikers defenders. The goal stood, and while the defender remained on the ground, the only thing hurting was Campbelltowns pride or the lack thereof. Referee Nelson played enough injury time to suggest he was feeling sorry for the Red Devils, but when he finally blew his whistle, it was quiet clear that the Strikers fairytale was continuing into its Super League existence, and whilst the Strikers sounded the warning in Round 1 of the new season that they are here to play finals football, the Red Devils could take solace knowing that its only Round 1, and the season still has 17 rounds to go.
Felipe Garcia for an AU contract, you heard it from me, the guy is a class above the Super League

The Western Strikers Soccer Club welcomes Goal Keeping SA's Chris Higgins on board.
Chris first came on board to take a couple of goal keeping training sessions late last season, which turned out to be very successful and enjoyable for all participants. From this the club worked very hard to secure the services of Chris, who is one of the states best goal keeping coaches to look after the junior keepers for the next couple of months and beyond.
Chris's weekly training sessions will be on Wednesday nights @ 6.00pm on training area L2 for all junior keepers u10-u17 starting this week 28/01/09.
